What TPMS does (and what it doesn’t)

TPMS stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. It’s designed to alert you when a tire is underinflated, which can affect braking, steering, and tire wear—especially in Colorado’s temperature swings.

TPMS is helpful, but it isn’t perfect. It can’t tell you why pressure is low, and it can’t prevent leaks. It’s a warning system—your cue to get the tires checked and make sure the readings are accurate.

Real low tire pressure

Pressure can drop from a puncture, a slow bead leak, a valve stem issue, seasonal temperature changes, or simply normal loss over time. If the tire is truly low, we’ll identify the cause and recommend the safest fix—repair when possible, replacement only when necessary.

Sensor or communication problems

TPMS sensors live inside the wheels and rely on batteries that eventually wear out. When a sensor fails, the warning can stay on even when the tire pressure is fine. Another common trigger is tire work or wheel changes where the system needs a relearn or reprogram to communicate correctly.

What to expect during TPMS service at Colorado Car Care

We keep it simple and methodical.

First, we check actual tire pressures and inspect for obvious leak signs. If pressure is low, we identify why. If pressure is normal, we move to the TPMS system itself—checking sensor signals, battery status (where supported), and communication. If the issue is programming or relearn-related, we complete that process and verify the system is reading correctly again.
